Preserving rare livebearers through dedicated research

Based in Vodňany, in the Czech Republic, and hosted by the University of South Bohemia, we maintain captive breeding colonies of endangered goodeids and other freshwater livebearing fishes. We welcome inquiries from researchers and institutions interested in collaborating on fish reproduction, genetics, or conservation.

Featured species in our Stock Centre

Our facility maintains captive breeding colonies of threatened livebearing fishes, with a focus on Mexican goodeids and preserving genetic diversity. We welcome inquiries from researchers and institutions interested in collaborating on reproduction, development, genetics, and conservation. Our long-term goal is to build the world’s largest research stock centre for livebearing fishes in all Europe. As the programme develops, we hope to make captive-bred fish available to research partners.

Ameca splendens

The butterfly splitfin is a resilient, striking goodeid essential to captive breeding conservation programmes. Its embryos absorb nutrients from the mother through ribbon-like structures called trophotaeniae, making this species a model for studying how livebearing fishes nourish their young before birth.

Zoogoneticus tequila

Famous for its landmark recovery story, the tequila splitfin remains a cornerstone of viviparous fish stewardship.

Xenotoca doadrioi

Known as the San Marcos redtail goodeid, this species is noted for vibrant coloration and robust colony behaviour. DNA evidence and anatomical comparisons helped distinguish this fish from Xenotoca eiseni, revealing previously overlooked diversity among Mexican goodeids.

Skiffia multipunctata

The spotted skiffia presents delicate spotted patterning and requires attentive, low-stress aquarium husbandry. Researchers compared fish raised in aquariums and outdoor ponds to study how rearing conditions shape courtship, boldness, and foraging.

Committed to preserving aquatic biodiversity

Based in Vodňany, Czech Republic, the Goodeid Conservation and Research Stock Centre studies and preserves threatened viviparous fishes. From Mexican highland endemics to unique live-bearing species like Heterandria formosa and Dermogenys pusilla, our work safeguards delicate species for research and conservation.

Scientific husbandry and ethical research

Every colony under our stewardship receives precise biological monitoring, high-quality diets, and optimal water conditions to preserve behavioural and biological integrity.
